New Trinity Hall with Spiritualized and Radial Spangle
Bristol

source:

Unfortunately for Stereolab they started off with a new, quiet number - I don't know if it was the mixing, or whether the quiet numbers always come across like that, but for the most part they were a bit damp, whereas the uptempo stuff sounded far better than the records. There were a couple of absolutely brilliant new tracks - one featured a 70s Glam riff - think of The Sweet 'Blockbuster', or 'Spirit In The Sky' - then just keep repeating it, for a long time. . . the other was yet another variant on Tim Gane's Neu! obsession - this time with a riff that spiralled upwards from the song, which brought a massive grin to my face - it was just that beautiful a sound, and I hope that it's on the LP.

They 'encored' (hardly walking off the stage) with Super-Electric, which was noisier, longer & better than on record. One of the nicest things was the obvious enjoyment the band were having making the music - especially contrasted against the seriousness of Spiritualized afterwards. Stereolab's grins were infectious - I think the last time I saw a band like that was either Dee-lite or Mudhoney!!
