| : A local theater here in Austin canceled the second showing of Emporer Tomato Ketchup, "due to the public concern over the content of the film. : How stupid is that, especially for a liberal town like Austin. Give me a break. : I really wanted to see it. Curses! : A description of the movie: : STEREOLAB'S EMPEROR TOMATO KETCHUP REMIXED TO SHUJI TERAYAMA'S 1970 EMPEROR TOMATO KETCHUP! : One of the most infamous experimental films of all time, Shuji Terayamas Emperor Tomato Ketchup is an apocalyptic vision of a world run by angry children who supplant their parents in every aspect of Japanese life, from politics to sexual reproduction, and is the namesake of the popular Stereolab album. The dialectical work of playwright, screenwriter and filmmaker Terayama and the post-Shingeki theatre (a school of theatre two steps removed from Kabuki) in general has been described as a complex, chaotic, incoherent maze of many diverse, interacting dimensions. Terayamas films are beyond merely subversive; they are blasphemous, earth-shattering and taboo-breaking. While he wrote many films for popular Japanese director Shinoda Masahiro, his own films were strictly non-commmercial and avant-garde. : For this special presentation at the Alamo Drafthouse, the film and the Stereolab album of the same name will be fused together live in the theatre through the technical wizardry of Peter Stopchinski of Brown Whornet. I could hook you up with a dvd if you really are interested |
