| A lot of crazy stuff went down in the world between Instant O and sound-dust. The Iraq War, the ever-continuing and increasing Israel/Palestine confrontations, tons of disagreements. I had wondered if Stereolab would address some of this stuff in their new record. Not that they would be specific mind you, but I hoped they'd convey some wisdom on the subject of war or confrontation. I was not disappointed. Good is Me discusses these issues artfully, without getting too preachy and specific. I interpret the lyrics as being about the ego's natural tendency to be it's own marking stick of good & bad and to see others from that vantage point. It is wise to believe that the marking stick between good and "not good," as Ms. Sadier says, is outside of one's own mind. Therefore one is not privvy to assigning good and bad to a situation. It seems that many wars, big or small, could be avoided by keeping this titbit of wisdom in mind. It's just what I was looking for from the groop this time around. But then again, they usually fail to disappoint! |
